What is a thermometer?
A thermometer is an instrument that will tell you the temperature of the air wherever it is located. We sell indoor thermometers and outdoor thermometers. The indoor thermometers are sold in an “insert” form and cannot be placed outside because they are not weather-resistant.
How do thermometers work?
Analog thermometers have an indicator hand that is operated by sensitive bi-metal hairspring mechanisms that respond to changes in the air temperature. This moves the indicator hand to the correct temperature. Digital thermometers usually have a sensor called a Thermo resistor that changes its resistance with changes in air temperature. A computer or circuit chip then measures the resistance and converts it to a temperature. You will then get a digital read-out.
Where should I put my thermometer?
You should put your thermometer in the room you want to know the temperature. Temperatures in your house will vary from room to room. If you are using an outdoor thermometer a shaded area is ideal.
Avoid any locations next to:
1. Drafts
2. Ovens
3. Air conditioners
4. Heat registers
5. Vents
6. Direct sunlight
Why does my thermometer show the wrong temperature?
First, realize that our thermometers have an accuracy of +/-3 degrees.
Second, What are you comparing the temperature to? Your local weather report wouldn’t necessarily match up with your thermometer. Also, make sure the thermometer is in a good location.
The only way to see if your thermometer is reading accurately is to bring it to the same room as your thermostat and let it sit untouched for 2 to 3 days. After that, the thermometer should be within +/-3 degrees of the thermostat reading.
